Selena

by Gary L. Wolfstone

Her voice has an Edith Piaf quality ... resonant and a little husky ... it reaches out to you and grabs you by the lapels! The song "Tu, Solo Tu" is haunting. I hear it in my dreams and know that Selena is singing to me ... singing only for me. She is an Angel in Heaven now, and she makes the other Angels weep with joy!

She was my contemporary, and I was unaware of her. Never heard her voice while she lived. I am sad to admit that I have only discovered her this year ... in 2003 ... and only now because I saw her biography on television ... the lead role played by Jennifer Lopez. It touched me deeply. It inspired me to rush out and buy the CD ... Selena Ones ... which I shall treasure forever.

The image of the youthful Selena singing for her beloved father Abraham ... her magnificent voice striking his heart! That image lingers in my mind because I have three daughters whom I love dearly and who amazed time and again as they were growing up. It lingers in my mind because the first woman I loved (at age seven years) was a Mexican American girl named Celita. It lingers in my mind because I, too, recognized the great gift that Heaven had sent me in my daughters at about the same age as Selena in the film.

I can identify with Abraham watching his beautiful young daughter going through a maturation and development from a precious child to a radiantly beautiful woman. I dream of the life they had together and the love and devotion she obviously gave him. I console him for the guilt feelings he must have experienced when he realized that he should have used some other approach to dealing with Yolanda, the shooter.

I am pleased that Selena's family insisted that J. Lopez lip sync Selena's music so that the soundtrack is Selena's voice and music ... there is no voice and no music equal to Selena. I am pleased that America is coming to know Selena ... her music is exciting and inspires love and respect. I am filled with grief at having lost Selena's beautiful life.

The photo below is a four year old Mexican girl who sings like Selena. For lack of music and for lack of an instrument, she uses her jump rope as her microphone. She bursts into dance at the mention of Selena's name, and her voice is remarkably similar to Selena's voice at the same age ... perhaps Selena is her Guardian Angel ... yes! ... I am sure of it!

I realize that she was not perfect, but my adoration for Selena is perfect. Now that you have touched me, Selena, I am loving you, as a father loves his daughter. I am loving you to the outer limits of my heart. I am loving you to the innermost depths of my soul.
